The Bell Canada story goes back to the early summer of 2000 when I first enclosed a copy of my Tax Exempt Status Card with my bill payments wherein I deducted the PST & GST. I provided an explanation and website referrals. I am paying Bell Canada for local service for two telephones and for a toll free number. I always send in the payments in separate envelopes so that there is a greater chance of more than one person reading the information. During the past year, someone from the Bell Canada office in Sault Ste. Marie has called and left messages on three occasions. These messages can be summarized by saying that they always regretted that Bell Canada could NOT honour the Tax Exempt Status Card and that I would have to pay the GST & PST.

On a sunny day in ealry June 2001, I was at home when a person from Bell Canada called again. This was the first time that I had someone connect with me. I politiely lisened to a similar message saying that Bell Canada could not accept the card and that I would have to pay the PST & GST. I explained why I was not going to pay the PST & GST. Then I asked for a supervisior. Apparently no one is the capacity of supervisor was available at that time. Then I explained to the person that I was collecting evidnece to prepare for an eventual court challenge with Bell Canada and that I would need a written letter from Bell Canada, signed by a person in a supervisory position, stating the reasons why they could not honour the Tax Exempt Status Card. Then I hung up the phone.

To read the letter from Bell Canada dated June 18th, 2001 click here. Note that there is NO signature, only Bell Canada  and a secretary's initials "ks"

I responded with a Letter To Bell Canada on July 5th, 2001. To read that letter click here. Bell Canada has not responded to my letter of July 5th, 2001. I continue to deduct the cumulative monthly GST & PST and I always pay for the service which I consume. As of this date, November 10th, 2001, the amount of cumulated GST & PST not paid on my three Bell Canada bills is $270.

I forward an accompanying letter to Bell Canada with every monthly bill payment. The October 31st, 2001 letter can be read by clicking here.

Every month I enclose an explanation for the record and I often add additional hand written notes. To view a monthly explanation and read my notes for October 31, 2001 click here.

Thanks to Michel Trottier for preparing an initial generic document to be presented to any business by anyone who carries a Tax Exempt Status Card. I have adapted it and I submit it to Bell Canada on a monthly basis. Read it by clicking here.

As of this date, April 8th, 2002, Bell Canada has not yet cut off my long distance service and I have not paid any PST nor GST. The outstanding amount remains on my monthly bill and I always deduct the GST and PST and pay only for the service which I use.
