Racist "Catch-22" Faces Canada's Consumer Health Organization
Toronto - The political arena has never been so sticky for the consumer Health Organization of Canada (CHOC) as the nation's oldest and largest alternative and complementary medicine advocacy group prepares for its Total Health Expo 2001 at the Metro Centre, March 17 - 18. Attacked on the left by the Globe and Mail and the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) for not acting promptly enough in canceling controversial author Eustace Mullins, and from the right by members and organizations supportive to freedom of speech and civil rights, they are simply stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Less that satisfied with Mr. Mullin's cancellation, Mr. Bernie Farber, Director of the CJC, is critical of CHOC Director Libby Gardon for not removing certain books from their catalog, and another speaker affiliated with the Lyndon LaRouche organization who some fear may be anti-Semitic "by association."
CHOC, like every radio and television program, publicly disclaims the views and opinions expressed by authors and speakers; and credits a sophisticated consumer movement for the wherewithal to determine what is, or isn't unsavory.
That's just not good enough for Mr. Farber who says that "group defamation" is his concern, and that "when something is brought to our attention we take appropriate action," which in this case included persuading some CHOC sponsors to withdraw support from the March meeting, and facilitating a media frenzy with interviews on national television and newspapers.
Dr. Leonard Horowitz, a Harvard trained expert in public health with extensive media credentials, asked by CHOC officials to negotiate a settlement, sees things a bit differently. "I called and spoke at length with Mr. Farber," Dr. Horowitz, a Messianic Jew said. "It strikes me odd that Mr. Farber expressed, on one hand, legitimate concers about documented anti-Semitism, but on the other, the Jewish community's consensus that the New Testament Jews, such as myself, are considered "enemies of the Jewish people." I would have expected a bit less bias from someone so obviously intelligent and at the forwfront of battling racism."
In a nutshell, CHOC is faced with the challenge, like everyone, of having to determine who is, and who is not, racist and/or anti-Semitic. Hate mongers rather than peacemakers on the far right and far left drive the issue atop organizations that justify their existence, promote their special interests, and milk cash cows of publicity along the way.
"This is sheer lunacy," Dr. Horowitz concluded. "Hitler killed whole Jews, half Jews and people who came to their aid. Scientific advances in genetics prove the Jewish bloodline is unique including genetic predispositions for sarcomas in elderly men and breat cancer in women. But accept a Christian perspective and suddenly you're no longer Jewish? This absurdity is staggering. If we don't tolerate neo-Nazis, then why should we tolerate officials respresenting the Jewish community who tolerate, condone, and even express disparagements against Christian Jews simply because it's politically correct to deny someone's interfaith."
CHOC believes that this crisis stems largely from society's collective ignorance and failure to resolve longstanding racial conflicts. For instance, even the disparaging term "anti-Semitic" is a misnomer since "Semite" stems from Noah's son Shem who preceded by several generations, Judah from whom the term Jew evloved. Likewise, the English name for the Christian Messiah, Jesus, stems from the pagan deity of healing, Ieso or Iesous, with the Greek letter "J" added. Thus, with examples like these, CHOC officials believe that bridging racial and religious divides cannot occur without focused public education and debate. For this reason, a program addressing contemporary genocide is planned for their March event. Representatives from all races and religions are invited to attend and contribute in loving, non-disparaging, and considerate ways. For more information, CHOC's office number is 1.416.490.0986
