PARIS--Thierry Meyssan says he got four death threats on Monday alone--and that's a normal day for him.
Meyssan is the author of an incendiary book claiming that no plane crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, and that all the attacks that day were plotted by a faction within the U.S. military.
The book has been widely ridiculed by the entire French media. But somehow it has become a hit, scoring in the top 10 on best-seller lists for three months, though it has been slipping lately.
So who's reading the book?
All kinds of people, French bookstore workers say.
''Women, men, old people, young people, people from every walk of life,'' said Nathalie Pageot of the Gibert Jeune bookstore on Paris' Left Bank. ''It's the biggest seller in the history and politics category in at least 10 years.''
Why? In a new book refuting Meyssan's theories, authors Guillaume Dasquie and Jean Guisnel say some French ''adore these cranks telling them that they are victims of plots, that the truth is being hidden from them, that one must not accept the official version.''
Now the book is coming to the United States. Its English title: 9-11, the Big Lie .
''I don't claim to have definitively resolved all these enigmas,'' Meyssan said. ''But the central theme of the book is that the official version of events is incomplete, and false.''
Meyssan suggests that a right-wing faction inside the U.S. military masterminded the Sept. 11 attacks to advance a military agenda, including waging war in Afghanistan.
He said an American missile, not a plane, struck the Pentagon. Pointing to pictures taken after the crash, he said the hole in the building doesn't correspond to the shape of a plane and its wings.
Asked, then, what happened to American Airlines Flight 77 and the people aboard, Meyssan said: ''That's one of the questions I don't have a response for.''
Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke, speaking at a Defense Department news conference Tuesday, said the allegations in the book were ''more than insulting.''
''There is no question, there is no doubt what happened that day,'' she said. ''And I think it's appalling that anyone might try to put out that kind of myth.''
The French media have been largely silent about Meyssan's book since a brief initial flurry of articles in March--some of which tried to discredit him with independent investigations.

FRIGHTENING FRAUD CONTINUES? ORGANIZERS OF SEPT.11 TRAGEDY NAMED
Approximately two months ago, French publicist Thierry Meyssan
published his own version of the Sept.11 tragedy in his book The Frightening
Fraud. In his words, the damage to the Pentagon building would have been
bigger if it were a Boeing-757 catastrophe indeed. The damage in fact did not
look like it was caused by an air crash. The publicist says that the crash was
just a lie. The Pentagon accident was organized and caused by “a group of people
who had authorized access to the Pentagon” and who aimed at the Navy Command
Center. Finally, as Meyssan believes, the US authorities performed the operation
to pursue their own interests.
Much was spoken and written about the book for a long period. The majority of
critics said that Meyssan’s version was groundless and unsubstantiated. However,
many people share the opinion expressed by the French publicist in his book.
Recently, Thierry Meyssan decided once again to remind people of himself and his
sensational investigation. This time, he names those people who expected to
profit by the Sept.11 tragedy and who organized the terrorist attacks. As could
be expected, Thierry Meyssan’s version completely rules out Osama bin Laden and
Al-Qaeda. In his words, a group of "far-right" American politicians and military
men defending the interests of the military industrial complex were the
organizers of the tragic events.
Thierry Meyssan is sure that reports of the US administration on the causes of
the tragedy contain flagrant contradictions. The publicist says that it is “a
deliberate and far-reaching lie," which has already caused the loss of democracy
in the USA.
If we follow Thierry Meyssan’s logic, we may say that the tragedy was committed
by top authorities for the sake of America’s far-rightists. Once again, the
publicist mentions no names, which is not a surprise, as Thierry Meyssan’s
unsubstantiated version is a mere fiction. The situation would be different if
real names, facts, and evidence were presented. However, in the current
situation, it looks as if Thierry Meyssan is craving for glory, even if it is
scandalous. The current moment indeed, as the world media are still focused on
the fact that the White House was warned of the Sept.11 terrorist attacks. In
addition, the scandal is not over yet, and nobody can predict how it will
finish.
It is beyond any doubt that Meyssan’s accusations will be surely supported by
some people. After all, it is very interesting to search for a black cat in a
dark room, especially when there is no cat at all. Or may be there is one?
