This brief article appeared on page 34 of The Toronto Sun on Tuesday, May 30, 2000......It is interesting to carefully examine the language used in this article. Note the word "warning," and note how the writer suggests that businesses will be on the hook for any taxes they may exempt. This is classic "scare tactics."

Jean-Serge Brisson, the newly elected leader of The Libertarian Party of Ontario called the RCMP and told them that if indeed the cards are fraudulent that they must charge Dan Lavigne and International Humanity House immediately. On the other hand he explained that if indeed the cards are not fraudulent then the government should issue a card to every Canadian immediately. We will be watching closely what happens in the days ahead.

Tax-exempt card scam

By Maryanna Lewyckyj

The police and government are warning businesses and consumers about a phony tax-exemption card scam.

People have paid up to $150 for cards from an organization calling itself International Humanity House.

Although the cards claim to give the holder tax-exempt status, they are fraudlent.

"Businesses will be on the hook for the taxes if they accept these cards," notes Gail Crossman, a spokesman for Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.

Use of the card by consumers constitutes fraud and tax evasion, and they may be subject to criminal charges and prosecution. Consumers who are approached to purchase one of these cards should call police or the RCMP.
